This classic introduction to geology, first published in 1905, is at once outstanding and deeply flawed. William Harmon Norton (1856-1944) was a professor of Greek, Latin and Geology at Cornell College and hailed from a time when to be educated was, first and foremost, to be well read in classic literature. It shows in his writing.This was clearly written as an introductory text book and so is chock full information and explanation, but the writing flows like water, clear and lucid. As a reader, you glide effortlessly along as the professor takes you on a world tour of geological features and endeavors to explain how they came to be. From river valleys to deserts to beaches to volcanic and glacial landscapes and even the journeys of ground waters and windblown sediments. He finishes with metamorphism and a tour through the the geological ages of the earth. You'll see the earth-scapes around you in a whole new light after reading this remarkable text.
There are flaws, however. First and foremost, none of the original illustrations or photographic plates are included. Nor was it proof read very carefully as there a number of typos. Most importantly, and not the professors fault, the text predates the knowledge of plate tectonics. What was most surprising to me was what geologists clearly understood even then; that entire regions of the earth had been raised from the sea, built into mountains, eroded into valleys and piedmonts and plains, found themselves as a shallow sea floor as the ocean transgressed the lands, and finally raised above the sea to become land once again. Geologists knew these processes were occurring but had no explanation for what drove them, other than speculative oscillations of the earth's crust and sea levels.
That said, this is a beautifully written, engaging and informative (within the limits of 19th century understanding) general introduction to geology which, despite its flaws, is surprisingly learned, insightful, accurate and a pleasure to read.
Highly recommended, especially for free!

While some of the information is good, this book sounds like it went through a couple of interpreters before it got to press.

Excellent Foundation Literature on this subject. Well written and stands as seminal treatise.
I have a hard copy of this book from the first printing. I wanted a copy I could read and not fear destroying. This book has some great information in it while some is outdated.
This was for my husband, and he found it very helpful in identifying rocks
This version has stripped the all-important illustrations to which the text constantly refers--hundreds of pages of illustrations have simply been deleted. This is not mentioned by the publisher so be warned--this is NOT the complete book--it is ABRIDGED.
